Central Sydney Dermatology is a well established and highly regarded Dermatology practice providing General and Cosmetic Dermatology services in Macquarie Street, Sydney.

We have six Dermatologists assisted by a team of Registered Nurses and Reception Staff.

Our primary focus is to provide a high quality healthcare service to our patients and their referring doctors.

Our History

Central Sydney Dermatology prides itself as one of the longest established Dermatology practices in Sydney. The practice was established in the 1960’s by the late Dr George Palmer in Hengrove Hall, 195 Macquarie Street. After extensive renovations, we moved in 2007 to larger modern rooms located in Windeyer Chambers, 225 Macquarie Street.

The practice currently has three Principal Dermatologists – Associate Professor Stephen Shumack, Dr Jo-Ann See and Dr Terence Poon.

What is a Dermatologist?

Dermatologists undertake a minimum of a further six years specialist postgraduate study after their six year basic medical degree. They maintain their professional standards and develop new skills through the professional development program of the Australasian College of Dermatologists.

Our Dermatologists are regularly invited to present papers and attend both national and international conferences.

Meet your Dermatologists

A/Prof. Stephen Shumack OAM

M.B.B.S. (Hons), F.A.C.D., F.A.I.C.D.

Associate Professor Stephen Shumack has been a principal at Central Sydney Dermatology for over 30 years. He is a general Dermatologist with an interest in skin cancer diagnosis and treatment, and the treatment of psoriasis and eczema. He has published widely on the treatment and diagnosis of skin cancer and melanoma, psoriasis, eczema, and also teledermatology. He received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2011 for services to Dermatology and the Community.

He is a clinical Associate Professor at Sydney Medical School (Northern) at Sydney University. He is also a Senior Staff Specialist at the Royal North Shore Hospital of Sydney, and has a private practice at St George Dermatology, Kogarah.

He is a past President of the Australasian College of Dermatologists and a past chairman of the board of the Skin and Cancer Foundation, Australia. He is also a board member of the International League of Dermatological Societies.  He has also been a former Head of the Department of Dermatology at St George Hospital, Kogarah. He is a Fellow of the Australian institute of Company Directors.

Dr Terence Poon

M.B.B.S. (Hons), Ph.D. (Syd), F.A.C.D.

Dr Terence Poon is a Laser and Cosmetic Dermatologist. He was invited to practice at Central Sydney Dermatology in 2007 and has been a principal since 2011. He is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists and a Fellow of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. He has published extensively in leading scientific and Dermatology journals.

Dr Poon graduated with Honours from the University of Sydney. His research during university holidays while still a medical student resulted in the award of the Douglas Cohen Paediatrics Prize. An elective term during his medical degree sparked an interest in Dermatology and Dr Poon undertook Dermatology resident terms at both Westmead Hospital and the New Children’s Hospital.

Prior to completing his dermatology training, Dr Poon undertook further medical research in Dermatology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney. His ground-breaking research investigated the effectiveness of sunscreens in the prevention of skin cancer – a major health problem in Australia. Notable collaborations during this research resulted in the publication of scientific papers involving other scientists from well-known international cosmetic companies. His research resulted in the award of a doctorate from the University of Sydney and the Cure Cancer Australia Young Researcher of the Year Award in 2005.

After finishing his specialist Dermatology training, Dr Poon undertook further subspecialty training in laser and cosmetic dermatology both in Australia and in the United States. His areas of interest include the use of lasers in dermatology for sun damage, facial rejuvenation, birthmarks, wrinkles and scarring. He is also very experienced in the use of botulinum toxin and dermal filler injections for skin rejuvenation.

Dr Poon is also currently the Medical Director at the Neutral Bay Laser and Dermatology Clinic on Sydney’s lower north shore. He continues to regularly attend laser and cosmetic dermatology conferences both in Australia and internationally.

Dr Jo-Ann See

M.B.B.S. (Hons), F.A.C.D.

Dr Jo-Ann See has worked at Central Sydney Dermatology since 1993 and has been a principal here for over 25 years. After obtaining her medical degree with honours from the University of New South Wales in 1985, she completed her residency at the Prince of Wales Hospital and then her Dermatology training at both Prince of Wales and St Vincent’s Hospitals in Sydney.  Her post Fellowship training in Psoriasis was completed at Baylor Medical School, Dallas Texas. As a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology she regularly attends national and international annual scientific meetings to stay  “up to date”.

Dr See has served on the State and Federal boards of the Australasian College of Dermatologists as well as having been a guest examiner for the Fellowship examinations.  She has been involved in clinical trials, product launches and has introduced innovative treatments to Australia.  Her key interests are skin care, sun damage, skin cancer and acne.  She is a pioneer in the field treatment of actinic keratosis (pre-cancers) with daylight photodynamic therapy.  Dr See is at the forefront of acne treatment in Australia.  She is invited as the sole Australian representative to the International Global Alliance to improve Outcomes in Acne.  She, together with liked-minded colleagues, spearheaded the formation of a non-profit health initiative, All About Acne, and has been its long standing chair/co-chair since its foundation.

Dr See attends and is an invited speaker both nationally and internationally.  She has made regular appearances in press, radio and television discussing, clarifying and de-mystifying dermatology issues.  She has also consulted with the College of Dermatology as well as industry in providing patient information for the general public and teaching material for general practice.

Of Chinese background dating from the gold rush, Dr See is a keen traveller, reader, a wife and mother of three sons.

Dr Penny Lee

M.B.B.S., F.R.A.N.Z.C.P., F.A.C.D.

Dr Penny Lee graduated from Queensland University in 1981 and worked at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, where she developed an interest in Dermatology. She then completed a General Practice training programme and obtained a Diploma of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. After spending several years in general practice, an opportunity arose to obtain experience as a psychiatry registrar at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. She subsequently completed her training and obtained Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 1993.

After working five years in private psychiatry practice in Paddington, Dr Lee completed a year of research with the Skin and Cancer Foundation, Darlinghurst. She set up the psychodermatology clinic and conducted trials into the pharmacological and psychological management of eczema and psoriasis. She undertook her postgraduate dermatology training at Liverpool, St Vincent’s, Royal Prince Alfred and Prince of Wales’ Hospitals.

Her interests include paediatric and adult dermatology.

Dr Sue Ng

M.B.B.S. (Hons), B.Med.Sci (UK), M.R.C.P. (Derm) F.A.C.D.

Dr Sue Ng graduated in medicine and surgery from The University of London St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London School of Medicine with honours.  She was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians UK in General Medicine and has acquired the specialty certificate in Dermatology.  She also has a Bachelor of Medical Science where she graduated with first class honours and obtained experience in basic science research in molecular neuroendocrinology.

Dr Ng undertook her Dermatology Specialist Training in Oxford, England which encompassed rotating through the Churchill/ John Radcliffe hospitals, Amersham and Reading hospitals.

Dr Ng has presented at the Royal Society of Medicine, American Academy of dermatology, British Association of Dermatology and British Society of Vulval Dermatology where she was the recipient of the best oral presentation in 2008. She has also published articles in leading journals and has been closely involved in teaching medical students at Oxford University.

Dr Ng offers a broad range of general medical and surgical dermatological services including general dermatology, skin tumours and skin cancer checks and management, including surgical management in performing small flaps and grafts, immunobullous diseases, phototherapy, photodynamic therapy, dermoscopy, systemic therapy in dermatology and vulval dermatology.

Dr Erin Mullan

BSc, MD, F.R.C.P.C., F.A.A.D., F.A.C.D.

Dr Erin Mullan is a Canadian Dermatologist who is now living permanently in Australia. Dr Mullan did her Bachelor of Science degree at McGill University in Montreal Quebec, Canada. She returned to her native province of Nova Scotia to do her Medical Degree at Dalhousie University. She then went back to McGill University to do her Dermatology training.  She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada in Dermatology and she is also certified by the American Board of Dermatologists. Erin was invited to join the Australasian College of Dermatologists after completing a fellowship year through The Skin Hospital in Westmead.  Dr Mullan mainly practices general dermatology.  She is particularly interested in the management of skin cancers, and this is in part what brought her to Australia.
